At the heart of Arusha City is located the Arusha Gymkhana Club. This is a members club, not for profit and received its first registration in 1953. It sits on approx. 63 acres, and is only a few minutes away from the iconic Arusha Hotel next to the famous clock tower roundabout, heralded as the central point of the City. Despite being a members only club, our rules allow, and we in fact urge, non-members to come and visit our facilities, whether as a passerby, a tourist or an Arushan attracted to what the Club offers.
History of the Club
For those of you who know your history of the City, you will be aware of the deep historical ties that the Arusha Gymkhana Club enjoys with the City of Arusha. In fact, it will not be wrong to state that Arusha City and the Arusha Gymkhana Club are geographically intertwined!
Going as far back as the 1940’s when the first Clubhouse was situated near the current Police Officers Mess, next to the NBC bank town branch. In the days when the original golf course covered and extended further down town towards the main railway station. In those days, other sports offered by the club included cricket (ground currently situated on Kaunda road) in addition to golf. It is not hard to accept that Gymkhana Club is firmly rooted to the City.
And then, in the early 1950’s, a new more modern clubhouse was built, which now houses the High Court buildings. Due to expansion of the central business district, the Golf Course grounds were also shifted and moved from its existing sprawling land downtown to the present land it now occupies.
Again, sometime in the early 1960’s the main clubhouse was found to be too big and too spacious and it was generously donated by the Club to the Government of Tanzania to house what is now the High Court, Arusha Division. A smaller clubhouse which is our existing old clubhouse (where the Gym is now found) was then built and the members were relocated. It was only in 2012 that this clubhouse ceased to serve the members as such, when we moved into our newest clubhouse, where we presently host our members and guests.
In the 1970’s, the Arusha Gymkhana Club lost the land that is now Mount Meru Hotel and some plots to the south of the golf course. Had it not been for the efforts of the then Secretary General of the East African Community, Hon. Charles Maina, we would have probably lost all that land as well.
In 1992 with the assistance of General Mirisho Sarakikya, the Club received the Certificate of Occupancy [The title deed] bringing much needed security to the future existence of this Club. We therefore pay tribute to all those members who gave their time to secure the Club and ensure that the Arusha Gymkhana Club will be around for future generations to enjoy.
And to the present!
So to the present, the club is now more than just a club house with a nine hole golf course. We offer other sports, tennis, squash, darts, snooker, a fully equipped gym and a 25 meter swimming pool.
We expect a cricket section to be formed very soon and also a chess section should be up and running in the next few months. So, whether you want to enjoy our facilities for a day, for a few days while you are passing through Arusha or you want to become a full time member, you are most welcome to contact us.
Whether you are sporty, or just want to play, learn or relax and meet some of the members, we urge you to come and get in touch with us. Our fees are affordable and we guarantee you great value for your money. Our club bar is always stocked and the prices are always reasonable and fair.
Two restaurants operate out of our premises that belong to the Club. They provide their culinary delights within the clubhouse at a discounted rate. Either for work or for socializing enjoy the free Wi-Fi service being provided by Cybernet and Raha.
